Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable appliances that contain artificial teeth. They consist of a gum-like framework with teeth made of porcelain.

Dentures fit over your gums so you can chew and speak like normal, and also help fill out your facial features.

What type of dentures do you offer?

Dr. Lockhart offers two types of dentures:

Partial dentures

If you still have some remaining teeth, you may be a good candidate for partial dentures. Partial dentures have a metal framework that connects to your natural teeth.

Full dentures

Full dentures are the best tooth replacement option when you lose all your natural teeth to decay, gum disease, or injury. These dentures replace all the adult teeth in your mouth.

How do denture fittings work?

After extraction, Dr. Lockhart provides you with a set of immediate dentures while you wait for your permanent ones. Once your gums fully heal, Dr. Lockhart takes impressions and measurements so the lab can fully customize the size and shape of your dentures.

Once the new dentures arrive, Dr. Lockhart has you try them on for proper fit and makes any necessary adjustments from there. Dentures may feel awkward for a while as your mouth adjusts to them.

Your jawbone may shift and change after you get your dentures. That’s why it’s important to have regular check-ins with Dr. Lockhart so he can make adjustments.

How can I make my dentures last?

When you take proper care of your dentures and mouth, your dentures should last a long time. Oral hygiene and denture care go a long way toward their preservation.

Oral hygiene

Dental hygiene involves taking care of your false teeth and your oral hygiene. Even without teeth, you need to clean the inside of your mouth by brushing the gums, tongue, and roof of your mouth daily.

Dentures require daily rinsing and brushing to keep them clean and bright. Use a non-abrasive brush and cleanser to clean them.

Denture Care

You also need to check in with Dr. Lockhart if they don’t fit right anymore. Don’t try to fix your false teeth yourself or you could permanently damage them.

You also want to make sure your dentures don’t get dry by placing them in water when you’re not wearing them. If they get dry, your false teeth may warp.
