Dental Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a tooth replacement option, consisting of a fixed appliance of artificial teeth that bridge the gap left by missing teeth. The two most common types of dental bridges are traditional dental bridges and implant-supported bridges.

Traditional bridges are anchored on both ends by crowns cemented to existing teeth, whereas dental implants hold implant-supported bridges in place on both sides.

What happens during the bridge placement?

At your first appointment, Dr. Lockhart prepares your anchor teeth by removing enough enamel to place the crown over the top. Then, he takes measurements and impressions to send to the lab so they can prepare your bridge and crowns.

While the lab prepares your bridge, Dr. Lockhart installs a temporary bridge. At the next appointment, he removes the temporary bridge and fits you for your permanent one.

Dr. Lockhart makes adjustments to the new bridge for fit, which could take more than one visit, if necessary. When the bridge is ready, Dr. Lockhart cements it in place, along with the crowns.

What other options do I have for missing teeth?

Aside from traditional and implant-supported bridges, you do have several other choices to replace missing teeth. The alternatives include:

  • Dental implants: an artificial root and crown can replace one or more missing teeth
  • Partial denture: a removable appliance that you place over the gums to replace a section of missing teeth
  • Full dentures: a removable appliance that replaces your teeth when they’re all missing

What are the advantages of a dental bridge?

Dental bridges provide both functional and cosmetic benefits.

Functional advantages

By filling in a gap left by missing teeth, a bridge prevents your remaining teeth from shifting. Bridges also alleviate abnormal stress on your bite by distributing pressure.

Not only can you eat normally again with a bridge, you can also speak normally. Missing teeth can interfere with the way you enunciate words, but bridges eliminate that problem.

Bridges have the added convenience of being fixed in place. Bridges feel comfortable and secure, and they don’t require any special care beyond your normal hygiene routine.

Cosmetic advantages

Bridges help improve your smile’s appearance and reduce your embarrassment by filling in the missing gap in your teeth. They also fill out your facial features, preventing them from becoming sunken from the gaps.
